I watch for this bias with my daughter. My son is quite comfortable telling me how awesome he is and it feels natural for him to do so; my daughter ‘not so much'. In fact, last week after reviewing her standardized test scores, she started to tell me about a type of math problem she doesn't do well. I responded with “Please do tell me, and then I'd like to hear about a type of problem you do especially well.” She did. No complaining, just matter-of-factly said, “I'm awesome at division.”
Happy was I.
